Do Reliability Numbers Tell the Complete Story? The 7 Most Important Reliability Considerations in Terms of VOC

The field of reliability engineering has developed into a full-fledged discipline in recent years, especially with the availability of computational aids, simulation techniques and large data banks. The analytical tools and techniques have become more common, user friendly and are practiced routinely by professionals. Often, the objective is to arrive at the overall reliability of the product in terms of a number (as per the classical definition) for the objective assessment, for comparison and as a sales parameter. However, today's industry has become more customer focused and a customer cannot figure out what such a number means. For an average customer, reliability is the trustworthiness of the product and its services. How can one single number, however accurate and well defined, instill a customer’s confidence in the product? This presentation gets to the key considerations that a customer is concerned about and what those things mean in terms of reliability engineering.

Key Words: Warranty, Service Life, Maintenance, Performance Degradation, Safety
